Recommended Vaccines

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends the following vaccinations for children:

Tenanus (DTaP, Tdap, DTP-Hib, DT)
Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
Hepatitis A (HAV) vaccines
Hepatitis B (HBV) vaccines
HPV vaccine (Gardasil)
Influenza (TIV, LAIV)
Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
Meningococcal (MCV4, MPSV4)
Polio (OPV or IPV)
Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV)
Rotavirus (RV)
Varicella (VZV)

Tentanus Containing VaccinesVaccines against tetanus is one of the most common type of vaccine. Tetanus is a serious bacterial disease caused by a toxin that leads to stiffness of your jaw muscles and other muscles. Tetanus can cause severe muscle spasms, make breathing difficult and, ultimately, threaten your life.

DTaP, Tdap, DTP-Hib, DT, Td, TT all vaccinate against tetanus.

DTaP or Tdap – vaccination against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis

DTP-Hib – vaccination against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and Haemophilus influenzae type b

DT or Td – vaccination against diphtheria and tetanus

TT – vaccination against tetanus alone

There are two basic products that can be used in children younger than age 7 years (DTaP and DT) and two that can be used in older children and adults (Td and Tdap).

Tetanus

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Haemophilus influenzae type b disease, also called Hib disease, is an illness that can cause a potentially fatal brain infection in young children. Until recently, Hib disease was an important cause of serious, often deadly, infections in children under age 5. Hib, DTaP-Hib, Hib-HBV all protect against Haemophilus influenzae type b.

Hib – vaccination against Hib alone

DTaP-Hib – vaccination against Hib in combination with DTaP (Diphtheria-Tetanus-acellular Pertussis)

Hib-HBV – vaccination against Hib in combination with recombinant hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine

Hepatitis A (HAV)Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV).   Havrix (GlaxoSmithKline [GSK]), Vaqta (Merck & Co.) are two vaccines that protect against Hepatitis A only.  Twinrix (Havrix and Engerix-B) protects against both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.

Disease GlossaryDiphtheria

Diphtheria is an upper respiratory tract illness characterized by sore throat, low fever, and an adherent membrane (a pseudomembrane) on the tonsils, pharynx, and/or nasal cavity.

Haemophilus Influenzae type b

Haemophilus influenzae type b, or Hib, is a bacterium estimated to be responsible for some three million serious illnesses and an estimated 386 000 deaths per year, chiefly through meningitis and pneumonia.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV).  Individuals suffering from Hepatitis A will suffer from fever, malaise, anorexia, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, and jaundice.  The signs and symptoms of the disease usually last less than 2 months, although 10% to 15% of symptomatic persons have prolonged illness (usually referred to as relapsing hepatitis A) lasting up to 6 months.

Hepatitis B

Pertussis

Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable, violent coughing.

Tetanus

The tetanus toxin causes severe muscle contractions, or spasms. Fever, sweating, elevated blood pressure, and rapid heart rate may also occur. Spasms of the vocal cords or the muscles of respiration can interfere with breathing, and pneumonia is common. Contraction of muscles can be so severe that the spine or other bones are fractured.
