Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis

Vaccines are linked to a serious inflammation of the brain called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.

What is Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM)? Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is characterized by a brief but intense attack of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord that damages myelin – the protective covering of nerve fibers. It may also damage white matter (brain tissue that takes its name from the white color of myelin), leading to neurological symptoms such as loss of vision (due to inflammation of the optic nerve) in one or both eyes, weakness even to the point of paralysis, and difficulty coordinating voluntary muscle movements (such as those used in walking).

How does ADEM appear? Symptoms usually begin 1–3 weeks after infection or vaccination. Major symptoms include fever, headache, drowsiness, seizures and coma. Although initially the symptoms are usually mild, they worsen rapidly over the course of hours to days, with the average time to maximum severity being about four and a half days.

What are the long term complications of ADEM?

  • Motor Deficits

The range in severity from mild clumsiness to difficulty walking and weakness on one side of the body to full paralysis.

  • Neurocognitive

Behavioural problems, inability to keep attention, internalizing behaviour/affect similar to autism, lower IQ,  and short-term memory loss.

Encephalopathy

Vaccines are linked to various conditions which affects the brain and can be grouped together as encephalopathy.

What is Encephalopathy? Encephalopathy is a term for any diffuse disease of the brain that alters brain function or structure. Encephalopathy may be caused by infectious agent (bacteria, virus, or prion), metabolic or mitochondrial dysfunction, brain tumor or increased pressure in the skull, prolonged exposure to toxic elements (including solvents, drugs, radiation, paints, industrial chemicals, and certain metals), chronic progressive trauma, poor nutrition, or lack of oxygen or blood flow to the brain. The hallmark of encephalopathy is an altered mental state.

Depending on the type and severity of encephalopathy, common neurological symptoms are

  • progressive loss of memory and cognitive ability,
  • subtle personality changes,
  • inability to concentrate,
  • lethargy, and
  • progressive loss of consciousness.

Other neurological symptoms may include myoclonus (involuntary twitching of a muscle or group of muscles), nystagmus (rapid, involuntary eye movement), tremor, muscle atrophy and weakness, dementia, seizures, and loss of ability to swallow or speak. Blood tests, spinal fluid examination, imaging studies, electroencephalograms, and similar diagnostic studies may be used to differentiate the various causes of encephalopathy.

Vaccines are linked to the development of encephalopathy. Encephalopathy after vaccination has been linked to the development of learning disabilities, autism and even death. If you or a loved one suffered from an inflammation of the brain after receiving a vaccination please contact our vaccine injury lawyers at 1-800-810-3457 or via our online contact form for a free legal consultation. What are the long term complications of Encephalopathy? Complications of encephalopathy vary from none to death.

  • hepatic (liver) encephalopathy – brain swelling with herniation, coma, death;
  • metabolic encephalopathy – irritability, lethargy, depression, tremors; occasionally coma or death;
  • anoxic (low oxygen) encephalopathy - wide range of complications, from personality changes, severe brain damage to death;
  • uremic (kidney related) encephalopathy – lethargy, hallucinations, stupor, muscle twitching, seizures, death;
  • hashimoto’s encephalopathy – confusion, heat intolerance, dementia;
  • wernicke’s encephalopathy – mental confusion, memory loss, decreased ability to move eyes;
  • shigella encephalopathy – headache, stiff neck, delirium, seizures, coma; and
  • infectious causes of pediatric encephalopathy – irritability, poor feeding, hypotonia or floppy baby syndrome, seizures, death.

Encephalopathy after vaccination has been linked to a wide range of serious and deadly conditions. If you or a loved one suffered from any of the above conditions after receiving a vaccination please contact our vaccine injury lawyers at 1-800-810-3457 or via our online contact form for a free legal consultation.

Seziures

Children are more likely to suffer from vaccine related seizures. Children are most likely to experience vaccine related seizures, especially after the mmr vaccine.  Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain. Symptoms may vary depending on the part of the brain that is involved, but seizures often cause unusual sensations, uncontrollable muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness. When seizures recur, it may indicate the chronic condition known as epilepsy.

Children or adults suffering from a seizure may display one or many of the following symptoms:

  • staring;
  • jerking movements of the arms and legs;
  • stiffening of the body;
  • loss of consciousness;
  • breathing problems or breathing stops;
  • loss of bowel or bladder control;
  • falling suddenly for no apparent reason;
  • not responding to noise or words for brief periods;
  • appearing confused or in a haze;
  • sleepiness and irritable upon waking in the morning;
  • nodding the head;
  • periods of rapid eye blinking and staring;

During the seizure, the child’s lips may become bluish and breathing may not be normal. The movements are often followed by a period of sleep or disorientation.  If you or a loved one suffered from seizures shortly after receiving a vaccine then we may be able to help.  Contact our vaccine injury lawyers for a free legal consulation today at 1-800-810-3457 or fill out our online form.

Tourette’s Syndrome

Tourette syndrome is neuropsychiatric disorder with onset usually in childhood, characterized by the presence of multiple physical (motor) tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic; these tics characteristically wax and wane. Tourette’s is defined as part of a spectrum of tic disorders, which includes transient and chronic tics.

People with Tourette’s Syndrome are also likely to have the following conditions:

  • associated conditions include attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD or ADHD);
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD);
  • learning disabilities; and
  • sleep disorders.

If you or a loved one developed Tourette’s syndrome after receiving a vaccination please contact our vaccine injury lawyers at 1-800-810-3457 or via our online contact form for a free legal consultation.
