Parents of narcoleptic children launch support group

Parents Allege Flu Vaccine Caused Narcolepsy In Their Children

A group of parents who believe their children developed the serious sleep disorder, narcolepsy, as a result of receiving the swine flu vaccine, Pandemrix, officially launched a new support group called SOUND.

SOUND (Sufferers of Unique Narcolepsy Disorder) is made up of the families and friends of children who have been diagnosed with this disorder after receiving the swine flu vaccine.

Nacrolepsy = Abnormal Sleep Patterns

Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder caused by the brain’s inability to regulate sleep/wake cycles normally. There is no cure for it and symptoms can include excessive daytime sleepiness, loss of muscle tone, vivid hallucinations during sleep or after wakening and brief episodes of total paralysis at the beginning or end of sleep.

Mairead Lawless, the founder of SOUND, stated that the group is aimed specifically at those who believe they developed it as a result of the flu vaccination. She alleges that more than 20 children in Ireland have been formally diagnosed with narcolepsy and all received Pandemrix. The children are aged between six and 18.

The Irish Medicines Board has confirmed that it has received a number of reports of children who have developed narcolepsy after vaccination with Pandemrix.

Scientists Appeared To Support Flu Vaccine-Narcolepsy Link

In July 2010 Swedish and Finnish research appeared to support the link between the vaccine and the development of the sleep disorder in children and adolescents.  Their research found that there was a greater incidence of narcolepsy in young people who received Pandemrix.

Later that month, the European drugs regulator, the European Medicines Agency imposed new restrictions on the use of the vaccine in those under the age of 20. It recommended that they should only receive this version of the swine flu (H1N1) jab if the normal seasonal flu vaccine was not available and if immunization against H1N1 was still necessary.
