Vaccine side effects in 2018 have become a topic of parental concern and vociferous conversation over the last few decades. There is much literature that seeks to raise awareness regarding the issue to a greater level of public awareness. A great debate has ensued regarding the safety of vaccines, especially in the lives of children.
First, there is the medical community, generally represented by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. On the CDC website (Here) a lengthy page identifies the common, moderate, and more severe side effects of numerous vaccines, including those typically administered to children. Since the extremely common issues associated with vaccines are of little lasting concern, more attention ought to be given to some of the more infrequent, but frightening, side effects occasionally experienced.
Among those side effects, by way of example, are the following:
- DTaP vaccine: seizures, fever of 105+ degrees, coma, permanent brain damage
- MMR and MMRV vaccine: deafness, seizures, coma, brain damage
- Chickenpox vaccine: seizures, infection of lungs or of brain and spinal cord coverings [meningitis]
One of the leading elements of concern has been the usage of chemicals contain mercury as preservatives in vaccines, especially those administered to children. According to the CDC:
[blockquote author=”” link=”” target=”_blank”]Today, the only childhood vaccines used routinely in the United States that contain thimerosal (mercury) are flu vaccines in multi-dose vials. These vials have very tiny amounts of thimerosal as a preservative. This is necessary because each time an individual dose is drawn from a multi-dose vial with a new needle and syringe, there is the potential to contaminate the vial with harmful microbes (toxins). (Here)[/blockquote]
But, any discussion of vaccine side effects demands consideration of the other side of the debate. There is no lack of literature available that suggests that the CDC’s estimate of the safety of vaccines ought to be scrutinized more fully. Among these resources is Vaccination is Not Immunization by Tim O’Shea [Fourth edition, 2015]. O’Shea is not wildly opposed to anything that is associated with vaccinations. But, he exercises appropriate caution. In his introductory material are these stunning statements:
[blockquote author=”” link=”” target=”_blank”]Declining health among school children is pervasive. Despite the highest intake of antibiotics and vaccines of any group of children in history, our kids are fatter, sicker and dumber than before. The number of abnormal children is shocking: 43% to 54% of US children already have a chronic disease.[/blockquote]
He goes on to say:
[blockquote author=”” link=”” target=”_blank”]Over 13% of American public school children are enrolled in programs for some type of disability. [T]here is no doubt that 82% of all special ed students are classed with a label that may be directly influenced by vaccines.[/blockquote]
His work, along with that of numerous others, certainly raises a caution flag. Many parents have come to entertain serious doubt about a legal public mandate for vaccinating children with the 69 childhood vaccines now on the government ordained list.
Are the health risks that accompany the administration of vaccines to children to be left out of the equation when considering the risks of unvaccinated children in the general population? There is certainly room for legal considerations when balancing parental rights with community health risks.
