Typhoid fever can be very serious, even deadly. People traveling to areas where the infection is prevalent must take precautions, so they do not become victim to it. Avoiding green leafy vegetables, not eating or drinking from street vendors, drinking only bottled water, and getting a typhoid vaccination gives a person protection against the infection. However, there are some side effects of typhoid vaccine that people should be aware of, so they are not caught off guard if they experience them. You should know what is normal and what needs medical attention. Some of the side effects include the following:

1. Fever – It is not uncommon for people to develop a high fever after getting the vaccination. However, since it is an allergic reaction, they should be monitored to make sure the fever resolves and nothing more dangerous happens. If a fever persists, the immediate attention of a medical professional should be sought. It is better to be safe and have it checked out.

2. Nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting – Typhoid fever attacks the intestinal system, so comes as no surprise that the vaccine can cause distress in this area. People can suffer from vomiting and nausea as a result of the vaccine. Furthermore, the vaccine can cause diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. This would happen because of the loss of nutrients and water through diarrhea. Some of these symptoms can be a sign of an allergic reaction. If the symptoms persist, hospitalization may be necessary to make sure hydration is maintained and no other allergic reactions to the vaccine develop.

3. Shoulder pain – Although it is a very rare side effect of the typhoid vaccination, the patient may leave lasting pain in the shoulder. It can inhibit the range of motion in the arm the vaccine was administered to. This pain can be caused by the placement of the shot and whether it was administered correctly. The pain and limited mobility will dissipate over time and can be managed with either over-the-counter drugs or prescriptions from a doctor.

4. Anaphylaxis – This is also very rare, but it is possible to have a serious allergic reaction to the vaccine. Therefore, it is important to remain in the doctor’s office for a little while after the vaccine is administered. This way, if an allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face and throat, occurs, medical attention can be administered right away.

5. Skin rash – Redness and swelling might be present at the injection site. Furthermore, a skin rash could develop that causes itching and irritation, especially in the hands or feet. If this happens, the doctor should be consulted. This reaction is not severe and can usually be treated with topical lotions or creams. However, itching can be indicative of a rare side effect and the doctor may have other protocols to follow for treatment.

Most side effects of typhoid vaccine are mild and will go away in no time. It is important to let the doctor know if you have adverse effects from the vaccine, so any problems can be managed quickly and properly. After receiving the vaccine, be prepared for the potential side effects and make sure they are monitored properly.
